Whenever you order a beer in Mexico you’re asked a question, “clara o oscura?” What this means simply is do you want a dark beer or light beer? All those of us in the USA are accustomed to an array of different beers, things are a little simpler in many parts of Mexico. You have to choose between clara o oscura then you are probably choosing between A light and dark version of one of the local or regional brews.
Make no mistake, Mexico does have a wide diversity of fear. It is one of the countries in the world that drinks the most amount of beer. We don’t have any facts to back that up, but I’m sure we can find it. In other words, if you are a licker of dark beer, light beer, Amber’s, IPA, or the wide array of artisanal Brews, you’re going to find a place to drink in Mexico. Especially Mexico City.
But if you’re looking for what we recommend look no further. Here are Jimmie and Michael’s top three picks for claras and oscuras from around Mexico.
Jimmie’s Picks
I don’t usually drink cervezas claras (light beers). If it’s going in my mouth, I like it to have a little color. But sometimes a light beer is unavoidable. If I’m on the beach, they usually only have light beers especially if they’re in some far flung remote part of the country. I’ll drink a Superior or a Sol beer if I have to. NEVER a Corona! Barf!

But my all time favorite beers are the amber beers Indio or Victoria. They have such a great full flavor. Plus, they’re best on the patio during a cool Mexico City night listening to mariachi or salsa music in the distance.

My favorite beer is Bohemia. It’s dark and smooth and has a really great flavor! I definitely recommend you try it. If I have to drink a clara, then it will be Carta Blanca or Superior. Some say that they are cheaper beers. But I love them! Especially when they’re in a michelada or a clamatada (the beer + clamato mixture they make). Give any of them a try and let me know what you think!
