Chinampas of Xochimilco

Sometimes referred to as the ‘Venice of Mexico’, the canals of Xochimilco are a unique site near Mexico City. Visitors can tour the area on traditional wooden boats called trajineras while a local pilots the boat much like the gondolas in Venice. It’s a great place to take in the festive atmosphere where you’ll hear mariachi music playing, see local food and drinks for sale and enjoy an overall ‘fiesta’ mood.

This area also represents what Mexico City looked like before the arrival of the Spanish. It has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage sight.

Island of the Dolls

Time spent on the waters of Xochimilco isn’t complete until you’ve paid a visit to the infamous Isla de las Muñecas (Island of the Dolls), a place where the spirit of a young girl is said to still inhabit. Far from being a typical tourist trap, the island of the dolls mixes themes of ancient ancestor veneration with modern storytelling to share a spooky and mysterious story of the villager who gives a haven for the spirit of a young girl who is said to have drowned in the canals decades ago.

FAQs

What should I bring with me?

The weather can change abruptly, especially during the rainy season (typically April – Sept.).  Bring something to layer in case of a drop in temperature, but also clothes to enjoy the sunshine and spring-like surroundings. The barges are covered in case of rain and to provide comfortable shade. You can bring your camera, sun hat, sunglasses, a light jacket, and umbrella to be most prepared.

Will there be food and drink available?

We’ll be serving mixed cocktails of tequila and mezcal provided by our artisanal producers. Refreshments may include: still water, sparkling water, Sprite, Squirt, Coca Cola, among others. There are drink vendors selling beer and pulque that you may purchase as well.

There are many food vendor who ride their canoes selling tacos, quesadillas, roasted corn, chips, and other snacks. There are also places to eat at the docks before departure or after returning.

How much walking can we expect?

This is our most relaxing experience. There’s limited walking as you’re being piloted in a barge through the ecological reserve. There will be stops at islands to use the restroom and visit the Island of the Dolls. Disembarking is at your leisure, so take it easy and relax.

Are pets allowed?

You may bring pets on the barge. Please message us at least 2 days in advance so we can plan for your furry friends to join us.
