Mexico City – On July 5th, 2020 Politico reported that residents of the town of Sonoyta have blocked the road to travelers entering the country from Arizona and the Mayor issued a statement inviting “U.S. tourists not to visit Mexico.” This comes at the heels of a massive spike of COVID-19 infections across the boarder in the states of Arizona and California.
The town is the gateway to the popular oceanside resort town of Puerto Peñasco (aka Rocky Point). Residents posted videos to social media showing upset travelers and many claiming they had a right to cross the border because they were dual citizens. Still, the crossings are being challenged by residents who are concerned with the out of control spread of the virus that has shut down economic activity in Mexico and the U.S. – as well as countries around the world.
Drivers coming from Arizona are advised to check with local contacts about road conditions and blocades that may impede travel.
